Heads Up: The following details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies outside of the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the event wasn't just a fight for life.
Similar to other plot points this season, the truth about the encounter originates in the stage play the prequel play.
An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission
*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a warship into a plane dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.
This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase most likely held some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The stage play explains that Henry was transported in the Abyss, coming back hours later with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in the past.
Confronting Terror
His lasting fear linked to that memory highlights how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy still exists. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.
Will's growth has effectively disarmed Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
