Prison Surprise: The FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars
He contested justice and justice triumphed.
Sixty days after getting a twenty-seven-year sentence for trying to “eradicate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro now seems destined for incarceration.
Anticipated Imprisonment
The found-guilty coup-monger – who's been subject to residential detention in his residence while a series of legal procedures and challenges unfold – is widely expected to be jailed in the near future, amid mounting rumors that he will be transferred to a well-known maximum security penitentiary.
Past Remarks on Convicts
During Bolsonaro’s four-decade time in politics, the right-wing former military man showed minimal mercy for the country's jailed individuals.
“Why should we provide these dirtbags a easy time?” he once mused. “They deserve to be messed, full-fucking-stop. That’s what I reckon.”
In another instance, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “If you don’t want to wind up there, the only thing required is to avoid rape, abduction or rob.”
Jail Destination Discussion
Yet the prospect of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda high-security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, a group of four this week inspected the facility in an obvious effort to discourage the high court from banishing him there.
Senator Lucas, a politician from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was one of the visitors, said he expected the septuagenarian leader to be jailed in the next 10 days and worried his location could be Papuda.
Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe gut ailments – the outcome of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the ex-leader there. “His health is extremely serious. He won’t be able to cope if they take him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about packed cells and the standard of jail cuisine.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas recalled observing cells accommodating forty prisoners: “It's virtually one square meter per inmate.
“We spoke to the prisoners and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.
Backers React
The senator isn't the only voice expressing views before the former president’s expected detention.
Writing in a leading publication, a different supporter, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “spotless” time in office and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the greatest political injustice in its history”.
“It is an unfairness that erodes the hearts of many of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.
Mixed Popular Opinion
That may be accurate given the significant backing Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. But his anticipated imprisonment has also warmed the feelings of millions others who feel he should be incarcerated for planning to prevent the elected leader from taking power – and even scheming to have him murdered.
Reimont Otoni, a congressman for the incumbent leader's Workers’ party, stated: “Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Not a soul desires Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to sleep on the floor. We desire him to receive proper care – but dignified care behind bars. He must not persist being his personal jailer for his entire life.”
The congressman noted how Bolsonaro backers, who have for a long time praising the harsh treatment of prisoners, had abruptly become aware to their rights. “Recently has the extreme right – which has always claimed that civil liberties were not for criminals – chosen to inspect a jail to discover what circumstances are actually like,” he said.
“He is a lawbreaker,” the congressman maintained, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, insulting handling”.
Likely Jail Facilities
Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 inmates, his more likely location seems to be a adjacent jail for officers and other “special” inmates known as Papudinha (Small Papuda).
His potential cell are much more pleasant than those in the primary facility, although still a far cry from the opulence Bolsonaro enjoyed while occupying the stunning official residence, approximately 12 miles away.
Based on information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – roughly the size of vehicle spaces – and contains a 12 sq metre restroom with a water facility and a 12 square meter balcony. “Bolsonaro would be authorized to have a set and additionally a minibar in his quarters as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” the report indicated.
Political Reactions
He criticized the rumoured plan to send the former leader to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will determine his outcome in the {
