Child of Previous South African Leader Zuma Refutes Terrorism Allegations as Trial Starts
The child of previous South African President Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror accusations at the beginning of her court case in the port city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over statements she made on online platforms in the past during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.
A period of anarchy in several parts of the country in the summer of 2021, including looting and fire-setting, left at least three hundred dead and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8bn (£2.2bn).
She has been accused of fuelling this violence and confronts charges of encouragement to commit terror acts and public violence.
Background of the Legal Matter
The demonstrations were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KZN and followed the ex-leader's arrest for ignoring a judicial ruling to testify at an inquiry into accusations of corruption while he was in power.
She has consistently denied the charges against her, with her legal representative previously labelling the prosecution's evidence as unsubstantiated.
She has also frequently said the accusations against her were an bid to settle political grievances with her father after he founded his own political party and competed against the ANC.
Support and Legal Defense
This was supported by the foundation, which claimed the case was an "abuse of power" and a "systematic campaign" of "politically motivated and family-related persecution" against the ex-leader and his relatives.
A small number of backers from her party, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her parent and other organization officials were present at the hearings inside.
The defense has maintained that the proof presented by prosecutors is insufficient and fails to provide concrete grounds for a criminal finding.
Main Aspects of the Case
- Online comments from the past form the core of the prosecution's evidence
- Fatal protests in recent years resulted in significant fatalities and financial destruction
- The accused confronts multiple counts of incitement to violence
- Judicial proceedings are anticipated to continue for several days
The court case continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the judicial authority in what is anticipated to be a highly monitored legal battle with substantial politically charged consequences for South Africa.
