Chicago's MLB Team Sign Japanese Slugger Munetaka Murakami on an Lucrative $34 Million Contract.

In a notable move for their overhauling roster, the Chicago White Sox have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a two-year contract with the high-profile player.

Financial Terms and Incentives

The agreement grants a $1 million signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with annual pay of sixteen million for the 2026 season and $17M for the 2027 year.

Importantly, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • $1 million for winning the league MVP award.
  • $500,000 for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for placing in the top ten.
  • Another $250,000 for winning the Rookie of the Year honor.

The contract provides that he will not be optioned to the minor leagues without his permission and allows him to become a unrestricted player at the termination of the deal. Extra provisions include a team-provided interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.

Posting Fee and Franchise History

As part of the acquisition, Chicago must pay a posting fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami joins the ranks as the fourth Japanese to play for the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami during their time in Japan.

Career Highlights

Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 in February, enters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are finished with a last-place season, placing last in the AL Central but showing a significant improvement from the year before campaign.

Having earned league MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is famous for a historic 2022 season where he launched 56 HRs, eclipsing the longstanding record for a Japanese-born player previously held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the youngest player ever to win Japan's elusive Triple Crown.

His 2023 season was curtailed to 56 games due to an side strain. Despite fanning 64 Ks, he still managed .273 with 22 homers and 47 driven in.

Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has posted a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBI, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. Initially playing primarily at first base, he has spent most of his time to third.

International Pedigree

Murakami's heroics were on global view during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he delivered a walk-off double that drove in teammates for a dramatic one-run win. The following day in the final against the USA, he slugged a game-tying homer in the second inning, helping Japan's eventual 3-2 victory.

The power hitter is scheduled to be formally introduced at a media availability on Monday.
