Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential style architect who crafted many legendary styles worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and performative fashion, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
Price's death comes less than a month after he unveiled his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price moved to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he began designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he began working on outfits for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included various looks for her tour of the United States after becoming Duchess.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London just last month in collaboration with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
